Naropa University provides the unique educational
environment that balances personal meaning and creative expression
with academic excellence. The degree programs cultivate a spirit
of openness, critical intellect and the development of effective
action, while transmitting the principles of awareness and wisdom.
Naropa's faculty is remarkable in its diversity and achievements.
They are distinguished by a wealth of experience in the professional,
artistic, and scholastic applications of their disciplines. They
are committed to a heart-felt philosophy that brings out the individual
insight and intelligence of each student. The faculty and student
body at Naropa form a close-knit community, and this relationship
between the students and faculty is a unique part of the educational
experience. From the small class size, to the low teacher to student
ratio, to the vibrant atmosphere of creative risk-taking, an integration
of intellect and intuition is modeled and encouraged. Drawn from
over 35 states and nearly 20 countries, Naropa students represent
a wide range of life experiences, ages, cultures and backgrounds.
Activism, altruism and community involvement are among the many
notable characteristics of Naropa's unique student environment.
The unique Contemplative Psychology program is designed to support
students in self-discovery, inner wisdom, and the development of
interpersonal skills. Founded on the mindfulness/awareness teachings
of Buddhist and Shambhala lineages, world wisdom traditions and
Western psychology, the program guides students in the understanding
of who they are. Students develop compassion and a knowledge of
the functions of the mind. Becoming more expansive, they are able
to act with skill toward themselves and others.
The heart of Naropa University is contemplative education—a
philosophy that asks each community member to live with awareness
and respect for one another and the world. Sustainable environmental
practices are an essential part of this mission.
Viewed through the lens of contemplative education, environmental
sustainability is not just a theory, but the root of all healthy
action. Becoming aware of how one relates to others and the world
is one aspect of a contemplative life. Through the cultivation of
awareness, one learns to walk lightly on the earth.
Naropa University was founded in 1974 by Tibetan mediation master
and scholar Chogyam Trungpa and is patterned after Nalanda University,
an 11th century Indian university renowned for joining intellect
and intuition and for its appreciation of various contemplative
traditions. Naropa offers a full four-year undergraduate program
in a wide range of majors, a BFA in Performance as well as several
degrees at the graduate level. An active study abroad program in
Bali, Sikkim North India, South India, Prague and Costa Rica mixes
academic study and experiential learning with the philosophy, music,
painting, environmental and peace studies, dance and traditional
awareness practices of each country.
Naropa University seeks students who have a strong appetite for
learning, enjoy experiential education in an academic setting and
who have demonstrated an ability to live independently. Nontraditional
students and those with a high school degree or GED are welcome
to apply.
Naropa University is nestled in the foothills of the majestic Rocky
Mountains on 10 acres in the center of Boulder, Colorado.
